Locke Lamora See a Problem? VideoBOOK ROASTS: LIES OF LOCKE LAMORA
Well, that's probably because Locke and I have been dodging our own for most of our lives now. As for why we're going over the plan again, let me remind you that one good screwup will make the fate of those poor bastards look sunny in comparison to what we'll get.
These wagons were crewed by petty criminals whose offenses were too meager to justify continual incarceration in the Palace of Patience. Shackled to their wagons and huddled in the alleged protection of long leather ponchos, they were let out each morning to enjoy what sun they could when they weren't cursing the dubious accuracy with which several thousand Camorri emptied their chamber pots.
But just what is it that you won't screw up? I keep an eye out for anyone else trying to walk past the alley, especially the city watch.
If anybody tries it, I jump down from the temple roof with a longsword and cut their bloody heads off where they stand.
You going deaf, Jean? There were deep roots of money and power sunk into that row of three- and four-story buildings. Coin-Kisser's Row was the oldest and goldest financial district on the continent.
The place was as steeped in influence and elaborate rituals as the glass heights of the Five Towers, in which the duke and the Grand Families sequestered themselves from the city they ruled.
The seamless brilliance of the alien glass looked like nothing so much as liquid diamond, gently arched by giant hands and left to harden over the canal.
On the right bank was the Fauria, a crowded island of multitiered stone apartments and rooftop gardens. Wooden wheels churned white against the stone embankment, drawing canal water up into a network of troughs and viaducts that crisscrossed over the Fauria's streets at every level.
Bug slid the barge over to a rickety quay just beneath the catbridge; from the faint and slender shadow of this arch a man jumped down to the quay, dressed as Bug and Jean were in oil-stained leather breeches and a rough cotton shirt.
His next nonchalant leap took him into the barge, which barely rocked at his arrival. You know the black alchemists make fish poison from the seeds of those damn things.
He looked like a proper Therin, though perhaps a bit less olive and ruddy than Jean or Bug; in another light he might have passed for a very tan Vadran.
His bright gray eyes alone had any sense of distinction; he was a man the gods might have shaped deliberately to be overlooked.
He settled down against the left-hand gunwale and crossed his legs. I knew we could count on you to take pity on your elders and let them rest in the sun while you do the hard work with the pole.
As Bug poled them closer and closer to the Shifting Market, the water was getting thicker with such barges, and with sleek black cockleshell boats, and battered watercraft of every description, not all of them doing a good job of staying afloat or under control.
The scents of jasmine and oranges drifted down over them as their barge slipped beneath the protruding branches of one of the gardens; a wary attendant peeked over one garden-boat's wall, staff in hand to fend them off if necessary.
The big barges were probably hauling transplants to some noble's orchard upriver. I promise! I know my place, and I know the signals. I won't screw it up!
They were all trapped in their pantomime like figures out of the richly inventive hells of Therin theology: a pair of thieves destined to spend all eternity stuck in an alley, mugging victims that never passed out or gave up their money.
It was followed by shouts and the creaking tread of men in battle harness--but these sounds moved away from the mouth of the alley, not toward it.
At that instant, a dark shape darted across the gap of sky between the alley's high walls, its fluttering shadow briefly falling over them as it passed.
Off to their right, someone screamed again. The Shifting Market was a lake of relatively placid water at the very heart of Camorr, perhaps half a mile in circumference, protected from the rushing flow of the Angevine and the surrounding canals by a series of stone breakwaters.
The only real current in the market was human-made, as hundreds upon hundreds of floating merchants slowly and warily followed one another counterclockwise in their boats, jostling for prized positions against the flat-topped breakwaters, which were crowded with buyers and sightseers on foot.

I suspect they will never go away completely. Maybe so. I read just over one third of the book and found it to be somewhat interesting.
Were it not for the torture scene, I would have finished it and I probably would have read the next book in the series as well.
Instead I deleted it from my tablet. I left this unread on my Kindle for about 2 years. I had started it but lost interest after the first few pages and read other stuff.
Nothing significant in my abandon, it was cheap and am not that into fantasy in general. Too much re-Tolkien and not enough innovation.
I recently decided to give it another go, read it all through and bought the 2nd in the series right away. First of all, it is very well written, plenty of subtle wit.
The characters are quite well developed and you can see that the author has a lot of backstory about them.
Locke is a bit perfect for my taste, but he is entertaining enough that I let it pass. The second bit is how atmospheric and well-described the world is.
Camorr is a Venice-built-on-alien-ruins and Lynch totally runs with it. The somewhat Italian Renaissance names and society fit in perfectly and things are easy to visualize.
Set in a modern day crime novel, the plot would have enough twists and turns to keep you riveted. The Gentleman Bastards are confidence tricksters, grifters and con-men.
Schemes meet counter-scams and you're almost expecting a Nigerian prince phishing email to come along. Every so often, I would come to a point where I would think "but what about X?
You know, typical big gaping plot holes in silly books. And, every time, it turned out that what I thought was an oversight was actually built into it and made sense.
He is the only other surviving male member of the Gentlemen Bastards, other than Locke. When Jean initially joined the Gentlemen Bastards, Locke was hostile to him, refusing to accept a merchant's boy as a fellow thief.
However, upon admonishment from Chains, and some self-reflection, Locke realised his childishness, and made efforts to befriend Jean.
Their friendship eventually grew to become stronger than any other bond within the Bastards, with Sabetha referring to Jean as Locke's " particular friend".
Although they have had their differences, Locke would do anything to ensure Jean's survival, even at the expense of his own life.
In their confidence games, Jean is the brawn to Locke's brains. Locke has harboured a deep crush for Sabetha since the moment he laid eyes on her back when they were children in Shade's Hill.
He was particularly enraptured by her red hair, which she constantly kept alchemically dyed brown, and hidden away under hats.
This infatuation never went away, and he was heartbroken when he thoughts that she had drowned while on a job. This was however not the case, and she'd in fact gone to live under Father Chains' tutelage in the Temple of Perelando.
When they were reunited and part of the Gentlemen Bastards, Locke's feelings for Sabetha never waned, despite Father Chains' prediction that he would come to care for her 'like a sister'.
For her part, Sabetha was not blind to Locke's adoration of her and neither were the rest of the Bastards , but she did her best to keep an emotional distance between them.
During the Moncraine game, Locke after much prodding by Jean finally confronted Sabetha on the roof of Gloriano's Inn, and overtly confessed his love for her.
Sabetha, although more hesitant, also admitted her affections for him. There, in a small hidden room of the inn, they became lovers for the first time.
An unknown number of years later, Sabetha left the Gentlemen Bastards. Locke was heartbroken by her absence. He refused to speak her name, or let anyone else speak her name or mention her in his presence.
Even though he still kept to the Bastards' ritual of a glass poured to air, he did so begrudgingly. Such was Locke's devotion to Sabetha that he was never able to become intimate with another girl, red-headed or otherwise.
Despite their roles as opposition, Locke and Sabetha courted each other again on multiple dates around the city, rekindling their childhood love.
However, at the end of the Game, the Archmagi Patience showed Sabetha a painting of Locke's presumed previous incarnation and his wife, which has caused Sabetha to run away and disappear from Locke's life once more.

An intruder kills Bug and nearly Jean and Locke, who swear revenge. Locke goes to the Floating Grave in disguise, where Barsavi is celebrating the Gray King's supposed death.
Suddenly two of Barsavi's trusted bodyguards, the fierce Berengias sisters, turn on him and cut down Barsavi and his two sons.
The Gray King whom Locke deduces is the brother of the Berengias twins appears, introduces himself as Capa Raza and claims Barsavi's empire as his own.
Left without resources and needing funds to somehow strike back at Raza, Locke tries to complete the con against the Salvaras. Meanwhile, Jean investigates the after-dark activity of Raza's minions and realizes that the new Capa is secretly loading his newfound wealth onto a ship supposedly quarantined for plague.
Before Jean can tell Locke, he is ambushed by the Berengias sisters. He manages to kill both, but is seriously wounded himself. Returning to their hideout, Locke finds Jean incapacitated by the Bondsmage's sorcery, which relies on the use of Jean's true name.
Locke, whose real name is not known, overpowers the Falconer and tortures him for information. Wary of revenge by other Bondsmages should he be killed, Jean and Locke remove his fingers and tongue so he cannot gesture or speak spells, leaving him alive but insane.

To destroy the peers, he gives the Duke of Camorr four sculptures, actually time bombs filled with a substance that will cause all of the nobles and their children present at the celebration to slide into permanent mindlessness.
Locke races back to the tower from which he escaped and manages to convince Vorchenza and the Salvaras of the danger, and the devices are defused.
He next coerces the Spider to set him free to kill Raza, and not put him on trial for theft as a reward for saving their lives.Right-click to download as an RTF. The many delays really turned me off. It boggles my mind that this one has nearly ratings at a 4. I can't be alone with that frustration, right?

It's been another two years of back and forth, and nothing for over half a year despite the draft being supposedly done again. Well, at least he's got enough time to go on regular Twitter tirades.
He's writing, just not the stuff I want to read. So that's it for me. I've got no more patience for this kind of nonsense, especially not in a series that was supposed to be seven novels long, where we haven't even reached the midway point yet and an elusive anthology keeps being bumped down the Amazon schedule.
The Thorn of Emberlain is now listed on Amazon for release in August ! Whatever goodwill I had left for Lynch, based on the excellent first book and still pretty great follow-ups, either him or me will be dead before this series is finished, at the rate we're going, so this does not feel worth it anymore.

Was it as good as, say, The Way of Kings? Probably not. Yes, it was a very clever book. It wasn't boring and the pacing was great.
But the thing is - I didn't like Locke or his crew all that much. I'm judging from the entire series now as it's been too long for me to make subtle distinctions but I know that I'm unlikely to pick up this next instalment.
By the end of the third book I was feeling a little angry with Locke for being so star struck and pathetic around his love interest.
It's a personal thing. My favourite character from this series will always be Requin the antagonist from 2 which is a testament to how unattached I was to the main crew.
It's a good way to pass time, if you are, like I was, on a gap year or maybe less likely caught in a war, have nowhere to be and no electricity.

The world was gritty and real, and it had knocked everyone over with how good it was. So I knew it was a flattering comparison, but at the time, I was kinda irked by it.
I remember thinking, "Why do I have to be the next Scott Lynch Why can't I just be the first Pat Rothfuss I'll probably be a lot better at that, I've got way more experience at it if nothing else I saw that it was a clever book, and gritty, with a cool world.
And there was an orphan boy in it who was a witty, mouthy thief. A while after that, I met Scott and really liked him as well.
So I let go of what little residual irritation I had, not that there was very much Fast forward to now. The construction of it.
The language. The world. The cleverness. The wit. There is nothing I don't like in this book. Even so, do you know how rare it is for me to say that Right now, in the full flush of this second reading, I think Lies is probably in e in my top ten favorite books ever.
Maybe my top five. It's not really fair to compare the two books. They're different styles. Different subjects. Different worlds.
The beginning of his book is stronger than mine. His title is better than mine. Don't get me wrong. But "The Lies of Lock Lamora" that's a faboo title right there.
And his series title is better than mine too. His cussing is better than mine. Not in real life. In real life I cuss like a sailor.
